Mirrors : Reflection of Light : Science : GR. 8 General

When you enter a dark room, you turn on the light. The light rays coming from the source strike and bounce off all objects in the place. You can see things because the light rays are coming from the source and reflecting off objects.

So in our article today, we will talk about reflection, mirrors, and their types, and forget their characteristics and advantages.

Mirrors : Reflection of Light

First : Light

There are many different sources of light:

1- Sun

2- Lasers

3- Light Bulbs

Second : Reflection

How does light travel?

Light rays are waves that always travel in straight lines and in all directions. However, when light hits a surface, it can be absorbed, reflected, or refracted.

Mirrors : Reflection of Light
Reflection is the change in direction of light ray when it hits and bounces off a surface.
Light rays change direction when they reflect off a surface. We can classify the reflection of light into two types according to the type of surface.

 Type of surface.

1-      Smooth surfaces is when parallel rays of light hit a smooth surface, the light rays reflect at the same angle. Smooth surfaces include undisturbed water, glass, and mirrors.

Mirrors : Reflection of Light
2-      Rough surfaces  is When parallel rays of light hit a rough surface, the light rays reflect at different angles.  Rough surfaces include moving water, rocks, and a boardwalk.

Mirrors : Reflection of Light

Mirrors are smooth surfaces that reflect light to form images.

Third : Mirrors

There are many different types of mirrors. The three most common mirror types are:

1- Plane mirrors
2- Concave mirrors
3- Convex mirrors

Mirrors : Reflection of Light

Definition:

1- A plane mirror is a mirror that has a flat reflective surface.

Mirrors : Reflection of Light

2- A concave mirror is a mirror with a surface that curves inwards.

Mirrors : Reflection of Light

3- A convex mirror is a mirror with a reflective surface that curves outward.

Mirrors : Reflection of Light

Fourth : Properties of images formed by different types of mirrors.

1- Plane Mirror:
Plane mirrors produce images that are always the same size as the object.

They can be used in:

dressing rooms

washrooms

Mirrors : Reflection of Light

2- Concave Mirror
Concave mirrors can produce different types of images depending on the object's location from the mirror. However, concave mirrors are the only type of mirror that produce magnified images.

They can be used in:

shaving mirrors

car headlights, flashlights, and spotlights

telescopes

Mirrors : Reflection of Light

3- Convex Mirror
Convex mirrors always produce images that are smaller than the object.
Convex mirrors allow large areas to be viewed, they have a wide field of view.

They can be used in:

stores and factories

rear-view and side-view mirrors of car

Mirrors : Reflection of Light

Fifth : Identify the type of mirror

1- Plane mirrors produce image that are the same size as the actual object.
2- Concave mirrors are the only mirrors that magnify image.
3- Convex mirrors produce images that don't have realistic distances and size.
