Multiplying and Dividing in Scientific Notation : Math Power Skills : GR. 8 General

Some time we need scientific notation in our daily life, but some other times we don't know how to use it, so in this article i will show you how to use it.

  • First : What is it?

Since all number in scientific notation have base 10, we can always multiply them and divide them. To multiply two numbers in scientific notation, multiply their coefficients and add their exponents. To divide two numbers in scientific notation, divide their coefficients and subtract their exponents.

  • Second : Dividing in scientific notation

Divide the coefficients.
Subtract the exponent in the denominator from the exponent in the numerator. Remember that the denominator is the bottom number and the numerator is the top number.
Join the new coefficient to the new power of 10.

Third : Multiplication in  scientific notation

As division is the inverse of multiplication, the rules for division are the same as the rules for multiplication. So when multiplying and dividing positive and negative numbers remember this: If the signs are the same the answer is positive, if the signs are different the answer is negative.
